Yiddish - o varietate non-teritoriala a limbii germane, de origine iudaica, vorbita in intreaga lume ...,un dialect cindva folosit de peste 10 millioane de evrei - a influentat puternic cultura americana din prima jumatate a secolului 20 ..., cind mii de imigranti din tarile Europei de Est si Centrale s-au stabilit in New York City.
Iata un placut BBC Audio slideshow: Inspired by Yiddish, care atesta popularitatea dialectului in Manhattan`ul acelor vremuri.
Pentru cei interesati prezint o lista de cuvinte in engleza, provenite din yiddish, din care fireste, nu lipseste nici cuvintul folosit de vreo citeva ori si de mine pe acest blog ... "schmuck" = a contemptible or foolish person; a jerk; literally means 'penis'
Pentru cei ca mine care, chiar daca nu cunosc Yiddish, nu se mai satura sa asculte trilul acestui limbaj delicios, ... singura forma de nemtzeasca acceptata de mine (sorry, draga Neamtule Tiganu ..., am si eu limitarile mele), prezint aici o mostra de jazz de toata frumusetea :

In 1938, Cole Porter wrote "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" for the Broadway musical, "Leave it to Me".
The song was described by performer Oscar Levant (born to an Orthodox family) as "one of the most Yiddish tunes ever written."
Lisa Fishman translated the song into the Yiddish "Mayn Hartz Iz Nor Far Daddy" with the help of Zalmen Mlotek of the New York Yiddish Theater and performs it klezmer style.

Nu sunt pasionata dupa jazz, nu stiu decat vreo cateva cuvinte in
idish, (cele mai uzuale) dar, cantecul asta mi-a placut...
Iar fotografia, (pare a fi din New York), m-a dus cu gandul la bunicii pe care nu i-am cunoscut, (au murit cu mult inainte de a ma naste), parintii tatalui meu.
Imi imaginez ca asa arata orasul in urma cu aprox. 100 de ani...
La sfarsitul sec. XIX, tineri casatoriti, au plecat ca multi altii, sa-si caute norocul peste ocean...Au avut norocul sa se aranjeze bine, de la inceput.
Locuiau ca mai toti evreii, in Brooklyn. Bunica insa, nu s-a adaptat...Acolo s-au nascut unchiul si matusa mea, dar cand era pe drum al 3-lea copil, -tatal meu-, bunica a hotarat ca se intoarce in Ro. Iar bunicului nu i-a mai ramas decat s-o urmeze...dupa 10 ani de Amerike...;)
Si uite-asa, tatal meu s-a nascut in Romania, spre deosebire de fratele si sora lui in a caror buletine scria la ''locul nasterii'',...SUA-comuna New York...

vezi ca daca apesi pe "Inspired by Yiddish" si apesi pe sageata din dreptul fotografiilor, vei vedea multe imagini ale New York'ului din vremea aceea, cu imigrantii si si ocupatiile lor ..., comentate intr'un mod placut de un actor care isi aminteste ...
da..., interesanta povestea stramosilor tai !
Am gasit un site mai vechi si mai demodat despre New York si comunitatea evreiasca:

Cand am vizitat Newport, RI, in afara de palatele si mansions care il fac celebru, am fost si la sinagoga Tuoro.
Sinagoga Tuoro este cel mai vechi templu din America si inca functioneaza. Pe dinafara nu are nici un fel de semne ca este sinagoga asa cum nu au semne nici bisericile din preajma.
Tuturor lacaselor de cult li s-a interzis prezentarea externa a semnelor religioase.
Sinagoga este vopsita pe dinauntru cu un verde cam urat. Ni s-a povestit ca intr-una din reconditzionari au fost razuite 21 de straturi de vopsea si dupa catastifele sinagogii au ajuns la vopseaua cu care era vopsit interiorul in timpul presedentziei lui George Washington, care intr-o scrisoare catre congregatzie a subliniat si a intarit obligatzia Americii pentru libertatea religioasa a tuturor cetatzenilor.
De atunci, sinagoga este vopsita mereu in aceasi culoare.

Exact ! Asta-i motivul pt care-am pus acest loc drept...primul.
Nu cred ca difera sentimentele celor care se vedeau apropiindu-se de Statuia Libertatzii, de a celor ce s-au vazut coborand aici pe scara vaporului sau, mai tarziu, a avionului...

Un expert in schmuckuri ne explica:
schmuck, shmuck, schmo, schmoe, shmo n.: a jerk, oaf, fool...
probably not related to Schmuck "jewelry, decoration, adornment"
This word would normally not be included here because it probably does not come from German, but so many people have asked me about it that I am including an explanation.
The mildly offensive English word schmuck is from the very offensive Yiddish word schmock, shmok "fool, penis." This much is certain.
Most dictionaries say the Yiddish word probably comes from Polish smok "snake, tail," although at least one says it probably comes from Slovenian, which, like Polish, is Slavic, not Germanic.
The problem is that schmuck looks German, and there is even a German word Schmuck. One could even draw a connection between the Yiddish and German meanings ("penis" and "jewelry" respectively) with the expression "family jewels," but this is probably pure coincidence.
To complicate matters, at least one dictionary says the literal meaning of the Yiddish word is "a pendant" (which again could be a connection to jewelry) and that it is related to Old High German "smocko", from which we get smock, a garment that hangs around one's neck.
It gets worse: One dictionary I found said the Yiddish word does indeed come from German Schmuck (without even a "probably"). Go figure.
Many dictionaries avoid the question altogether (or are extremely honest) and say "origin unknown" or leave it at "Yiddish" (if they include the entry at all).

mai ales omul nostru de stiinta Neamtu (cel mai elegant si nonshalant din grupa cuvintatorilor)s-a aratat intrigat si nedumerit, cind lucrurile sint cit se poate de clare.
Faptul ca "schmuck" in germana inseamna bijuterie, iar in Yiddish, pe linga toate cele, inseamna "penis", ba uneori chiar "pandantiv" (adica o bijuterie care atirna) ...
reprezinta o evidenta mai mult decit stiintifica ca este vorba de acelasi lucru ...
PS. "bijuterie" vorba vine, dar daca asa au botezat-o posesorii ...
In lb. germana exista si un verb pe paza de Schmuck de ex. (den Weihnachtsbaum schmücken.... to decorate the Christmas tree) nu stiu daca si-n Yiddish s-ar putea folosi in acest sens.

"The national language of Israel is Hebrew. The rejection of Yiddish as an alternative reflected the conflict between religious and secular forces. Many in the larger, secular group wanted a new national language to foster a cohesive identity, while traditionally religious Jews desired that Hebrew be respected as a holy language reserved for prayer and religious study. In the early twentieth century, Zionist immigrants in Palestine tried to eradicate the use of Yiddish among their own population, and make its use socially unacceptable.
This conflict also reflected the opposing views among secular Jews worldwide, one side seeing Hebrew (and Zionism) and the other Yiddish (and Internationalism) as the means of defining emerging Jewish nationalism. Finally, the large post-1948 influx of Sephardic and Mizrachi Jewish refugees (to whom Yiddish was entirely foreign, but who already were familiar with Hebrew) effectively made Hebrew the only practical option for a state language. I-auzi !! Imi amintesc de un interview la TV cu scriitorul Bashevis Singer, care scria numai in Yiddish si era foarte indignat ca este considerata o limba "moarta" ...
adica cum ? se intreba simpaticul moshuletz (in Yiddish, ca de-al naibii venea cu traducator ...) daca exista cel putin doi oameni care au ce discuta in Yiddish, atunci limba nu e moarta !
