Bush in Israel

Bush tells Knesset US 'stands by Israel in war on terror'

During special Knesset session in his honor, US president criticizes deadly tactics of extremist groups, denounces anti-Semitism, 'especially by those who want to wipe Israel off the map.' PM tells Bush 'future peace agreement based on your vision will be approved by this house and by the Israeli public'

by ynet reporters, 15/05/2008

"I'm honored to be here… America is proud to be Israel's closest ally and best friend in the world; our alliance is unbreakable," visiting US President George W. Bush told a special Knesset session held in his honor Thursday.

"You have worked tirelessly for peace and freedom. When Americans look at Israel we see a pioneering spirit, talent and determination of a free people refusing to let any obstacle stand in the way of their destiny," Bush said.

Bush went on to criticize the deadly tactics of extremist groups and denounced anti-Semitism, especially by those who want to wipe the nation "off the map."

"We believe that religious liberty is fundamental to civilized society, so we condemn anti-Semitism in all forms, whether by those who openly question Israel's right to exist, or by others who quietly excuse them," he said.

Bush pledged that the United States has an unbreakable bond with Israel.

"Some people suggest that if the United States would just break ties with Israel, all our problems in the Middle East would go away," the US president said in his prepared address.

"This is a tired argument that buys into the propaganda of our enemies, and America rejects it utterly. Israel's population may be just over 7 million. But when you confront terror and evil, you are 307 million strong, because America stands with you."

During the historic address Bush also referred to the Iranian threat, saying that allowing Iran to acquire nuclear weapons would be an "unforgivable betrayal of future generations."

"Permitting the world's leading sponsor of terror to possess the world's deadliest weapon would be an unforgivable betrayal of future generations. For the sake of peace, the world must not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon," the American leader said.

"America stands with you in firmly opposing Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions."

Bush continued to say that "in 60 years Israel will be celebrating its 120th Independence Day, the Palestinians will have their own state… Iran and Syria will be peaceful nations, Hamas, al-Qaeda and Hizbullah will be defeated, the Middle East will be a peaceful region and Israel and its neighbors will be best of friends."

Is Judeo-Christian violence the same thing as Islamic violence?

by Raymond Ibrahim

Since the terrorist strikes of 9/11, Islam has often been accused of being intrinsically violent. In response, a number of apologetics have been offered in defense of the religion. The fundamental premise of almost all of these is that Islam’s purported violence — as found in Islamic scriptures and history — is no different than the violence committed by other religious groups throughout history and as recorded in their scriptures, especially Jews and Christians. The argument, in short, is that it is not Islam per se but rather human nature that is prone to violence

Draga Seherezada,

poate n-a luat-o razna.

Asa si unii in 1998 - ba chiar Ariel Sharon - cand profetic, in timpul vizitei in Israel, George W. i-a zis: "You know, Arik, it's possible that I might be president of the United States, and you might be prime minister of Israel."

Sharon, according to the observer, laughed and said it was very unlikely that he, a controversial figure in Israel politics, would become the country's prime minister.

But Sharon did, in fact, become Israel's prime minister, in a special election in Febr.2001.

Roy said...

"According to Dan, George W. showed great interest in what Sharon was showing them, was a good listener and asked "thorough questions". The reporter said Bush expressed obvious admiration for what Israel had accomplished as a nation in a very short time, at one point saying to Sharon, " If you believe the Bible, as I believe the Bible, you know that extraordinary things happen".

Ref. intrebarea " Is Judeo-Christian violence the same thing as Islamic violence " a lui Ibrahim,

Shehe, Shehe,
cine-a zis ?

intrand in miracol, cu tandra mirare."

vizitator,

vics said...

foarte bine ts,
nu trebuie sa fim toti signifianti intelectual
si ...,

It is not a fairy tale in which Seherezada's rags
are changed into the robes of a queen...

but rather a promise in which Seherezada in her rags

becomes more queenly.

Also within the prologue, Borges explains the need for the tale to be interesting, evoking the image of Sheherezade's narratives of the 1001 Nights.
(I don't aspire to be Aesop. My tales, like the tales of the 1001 Nights, are entertaining or moving, not persuasive).
The reader, like the brutal caliph, needs to be entertained, and this becomes the prime objective of the storyteller. As a result of this need, the 'real' content of the tale becomes subordinate to its ability to engage the reader. This aspect Borges plays within an earlier tale La muerte y la brújula (Death and the Compass).
Near the beginning of the tale, the character Treviranus suggests to the protagonist, Lönrot, who is investigating a murder, the name of the possible murderer. Lönrot dismisses this hypothesis as 'posible, pero no interesante'.
As it emerges, Treviranus had been correct in his reckoning, yet by arriving at that conclusion (n.m.from the very beginning, there would have been no story ...

The need for the tales to be entertaining, regardless of their historical accuracy or authenticity is mirrored in Borges' absolute dismissal of the need for originality.
In this respect, the storyteller is perfectly at liberty to recount the tale regardless of whether he is the tale's original composer. Thus Borges claims in the prologue of El informe de Brodie that 'unos pocos argumentos me han hostigado a lo largo del tiempo; soy decidamente monótono'; (just a few plots have pursued me over the years; I'm distinctly monotonous), a detail which accounts for the repetition of themes to be encountered within his writings.
