French Senate okays DNA tests for immigrants
by France-Presse, Global Nation Inquirer, 05/10/2007
PARIS--France's Senate approved Friday a controversial immigration bill which would authorize voluntary DNA testing on foreigners wishing to join their families in France.
The bill was approved in the upper house of parliament by a vote of 188 to 135, with the left-wing opposition voting against and 11 pro-government senators joining them.
Fierce opposition to the bill -- from the opposition as well as religious leaders and campaigning groups -- has led the government to make a series of concessions to win over critics.
Supporters say the measure would make it possible for would-be immigrants to speed up the application process by proving their kinship with family members in France. They point out that 12 other EU countries carry out similar tests.
But opponents say the bill would set a dangerous precedent by making genetic affiliation a criterion for citizenship.
The measure, part of a wider immigration bill, has already been approved by the lower house, the National Assembly, but it was rejected last week when it was examined by the Senate's laws committee. That decision was later overturned by the vote in plenary session.
Another provision of the bill would force immigrants to demonstrate financial means to support family members they wish to join them in France.
Potential immigrants would also have demonstrate knowledge of French and the country's values.
The bill now goes to a mixed commission of lawmakers from both houses which will try to craft a version that can be approved by both chambers.

Moucha, deci tu intr-adevar stai la Praga ....
Oneghin my ass!
